called me scared to bits. i was at work and it was loud and frightening out there. >> alex, this was the real deal last night. anyone who lives throughout new york city got a real sense something was happening that they hadn't seen in a while. dark clouds basically made 5:00 p.m. feel like midnight throughout much of the city. if this was a tornado, it would be only the ninth time since 1950, but the second time in just three months. you want to see some of the damage we're here in the corona neighborhood of queens and you can see just how strong this storm was late yesterday evening. look at this home. a three-story apartment building and in places hurricane-force winds reaching 100 miles per hour literally ripped off the roof of this apartment building, peeling it like a sardine can's top. we spoke to the family that lives inside that was inside at the time. his name is julio and i asked him exactly what was going on in there. he said the windows shattered and blew in on them. he was there with his wife, who was 7 months pregnant and her mother that they were all
11:01 am
terrified as ths roof fell on their backs. all of them were okay. he suffered a pretty good knock to his head, but will be okay, as well. now they're forced to stand outside hoping to get inside. 24 people here alone were forced to relocate. throughout this area similar problems as trees were knocked down and power lines knocked down and the power outages numbering 34,000 which is down from 38,000 late yesterday. torrential rains to go with it, as well. alex, for most of the people in this area, just an unfamiliar scene including the strikes right near the statue of liberty. is something folks around here don't see very often. >> peter, also a couple tractor trailers that flipped not far from you. >> yes, that's the case. some people had pulled over to try to escape these dangerous winds, including the 30-year-old woman who was in queens on what's called the grand central parkway that people around here will be familiar with. she, police believe, pulled over
11:02 am
to the side of the road because the winds were so strong and that's when the tree crashed down on her car. she was killed. a 60-year-old passenger in that car was seriously injured. but, today, is said to be doing just fine. >> you're absolutely right, peter alexander, thank you for that report. a similar scene throughout the midwest where heavy rain and winds brought down power lines and collapsed rooftops in wooster, ohio. they are confirming whether tornadoes touched down on the area. the wooster campus was forced to cancel classes today just to clean up after the storm. at this hour, two mega storms brewing in the atlantic. hurricane karl gaining strength and expected to make landfall in mexico and hurricane igor on a direct path to bermuda. in mexico, that storm has sparked severe flooding and power outages. in bermuda, winds and rip tides are kicking up as the residents are bracing for what's ahead.
11:03 am
let's get the very latest now from nbc meteorologist bill karins. you're busy. >> karl is not behaving either. taking an unexpected southwest shift. earlier in the morning make it mostly a rural area and not many populated locations in its path. this southwest jaunt, vera cruz a very popular spot for vacationers down there and the warm waters of the gulf is getting hit a lot worse than they thought. people didn't evacuate and now a category 3 storm where the southern eyewall could go right through the city. this is happening right now because landfall is only an hour or two away. as you can see here, that's where the storm is located. only 14 miles to the north of vera cruz and the hurricane force winds extend out further than that. notice the nuclear power plant to the north earlier looks like that is where the landfall was going to be. the only nuke ler power plant will get a glancing blow from this storm and the next concern
11:04 am
the mountainous areas and that is where we could see severe flooding. that's a populated city of almost 500,000. so the forecast for the storm making landfall now and it will weaken. as far as igor goes, a big storm taking its sweet time to bermuda and that will happen sunday into sunday night. here's the new updated forecast from the national hurricane center. takes it as a category 2 hurricane right, almost over the top of bermuda and right to the east of the island. you have to remember, alex, bermuda a very small island. this is a huge storm. even if it's not a direct hit. they'll get hurricane force winds out of it. >> thank you for the heads up on that. new sfuning tunning details acid attack that left a 28-year-old woman's face disfigured. she shared her story of a complete stranger throwing acid in her face. but last night police dropped this bombshell. >> during the interview, ms.
11:05 am
storro admitted that her injuries were self-inflicted. the attack itself did not occur as she had previously reported. >> nbc's kristen welker live for us in vancouver, washington. good morning to you. when did investigators think things weren't quite what they appeared? >> well, really, from the beginning, alex. there were a number of red flags in this case. let me just tell you what bethany storro's originally story was. she was walking in downtown vancouver and a woman she didn't recognize, an african-american woman approached her and said, hey, pretty girl, do you want to drink this and threw acid. she told police miraculously she bought a pair of sunglasses 20 minutes before this attack happened and those sunglasses protected her eyes and, therefore, she wasn't blinded. well, police say immediately there were questions. they wanted to know why the acid
11:06 am
burns that she had only were on her face and didn't go on to her neck or shoulders, which they say would have happened if some sort of liquid would have been flashed on her. they want to know why she was wearing sunglasses at night. another when bethany canceled an appearance with oprah for this week. police obtained a search warrant and went to her house yesterday and they talked to her and she eventually admitted this was all a lie. alex? >> is she going to face charges as a result? >> good question. police right now are still trying to determine that. they're still in the process of investigating this, trying to figure out what her motive was in all of this. once they finish their investigation, they will turn the case over to the prosecutor who will then determine whether or not she will face charges. she could face a misdemeanor charge of filing a false police report and she could even face a felony, though, alex. remember, the community has
11:07 am
poured a lot of money into her medical recovery. so, the question now becomes, did she actually use that money? if she could, she could be facing fraud charges. these are still open questions that investigators are trying to figure out. so, they expect to know next week whether or not charges will be filed. alex? >> what a perplexing story. all right, kristen welker, thanks so much. the mother of missing teen natalee holloway has confronted the suspect in her daughter's disappearance. beth holloway spoke with joran van der sloot after she snuck into the prison where he is being held on another murder case. michelle has the latest. >> when we heard about this we thought when five years ago when nat alholloway disappeared in aruba, her mother vowed to never give up and use all of her energy to find out what happened. she has kept that promise, traveling down to peru now where joran van der sloot is held in a prison awaiting trial for murdering a young woman down
11:08 am
there and she confronted him face-to-face. we recently heard this interview done behind bars with joran in which she tells the dutch tv reporter that life behind bars isn't that bad. he's been teaching the guards english in his private cell and now claims he knows nothing bout what happened to natallee. beth holloway's attorney said she had simply had enough hearing this. she went down there, teamed up with a dutch tv crew, got inside that prison and let joran have it. telling him that the united states has not forgotten about him. whatever happens in peru, he still faces an indictment for extortion here and if he knows anything about what happens to natalee, he should say it now. not ten years down the road, but right now. she holds no hate in her soul for him but he couldn't talk to her and gave her the phone number for his attorney. when they realized this was a television event they hustled
11:09 am
beth and the television crew out of there. here's what her attorney said on "today" this morning. she was in castro castro and she wasn't arrested, that people are reporting. nothing was taken from her. it was done without violating any laws or breaking any regulations. >> beth may have felt this was her only chance and they have been in no hurry to get down there and interview him as they originally wanted to. now they feel it is unlikely that joran will tell them anything. alex? >> michelle kosinski, thanks so much. a doctor that was wounded in thursday's shooting is in critical condition now. she was in surgery for several hours but is expected to make a full recovery after shooting the doctor, 50-year-old paul warren parus killed his 84-year-old mother and then himself. pardus was likely distraught over her condition.

former president jimmy carter may still be holding a serious judge against the late senator ted kennedy over his administration's failure to pass health care reform. president carter was interviewed by "60 minutes" about his upcoming book and made this accusation. >> the fact is that we would have had comprehensive health care now, had it not been for ted kennedy's deliberately blocking the legislation that i proposed in '78 or '79. >> you blame teddy for the failure. >> exactly. >> health care. >> it was his fault. ted kennedy killed the bill. >> just to spite you? that's the implication. >> that's the implication. he did not want to see me have a major success in that realm of american life. >> well, senator kennedy was one of the leading advocates for health care reform during his senate career. he died before president obama's health care bill was signed into law in march. conservative activists are out in force this morning in the
